Note: This pattern is listed in Mel Marshall's, Steelhead, Copyright 1973 as one of the top two dozen Winter Steelhead flies to be counted on. He writes, that Montreal Silver is a variant of the original Montreal or Canada fly, which is tied with a Claret Floss body and Gold Tinsel rib. The original is credited to Sheriff Peter Cowan of Montreal and dates back to 1840 or 1850.
