The Flies of Monte Smith

Benham Light

It has been a few years since Monte Smith sent his last flies to Salmonfly.Net, but these remarkable new submissions were well worth the wait. Monte's flies are the perfect blend of utility and artistry and his photography  is at times stunning. I hope these submissions will bring a second look for the readers of Salmonfly.Net to all his flies. MORE...

Book Reviews

Fly Fishing Tales
by Dennis and Mike Dickson

Recently, while a rare northwest storm ravaged our normally mild climate, and we found ourselves snowbound, I needed a good book to spend the time. I had just found out that a great new collection of fly fishing stories was available  so I downloaded Dennis Dickson and his son Mike's Fly Fishing Tales on my Kindle. I already knew that Dennis could spin a yarn like no other, even when the stories are true, and now I know that his son has inherited his talent. I was riveted to it all afternoon while the snow piled on the rooftop and driveway, resisting my duty to start clearing a path from the house... It was the perfect book for a cold winter afternoon by the  fireplace. It will keep you in stitches while you are wishing that you were there on the river to share the fun.

The Flies of Per Hansen

Blue Fish

I think you will really enjoy these new submissions from Danish Fly Tyer Per Hansen. Many of these are his own creations, designed for Seatrout, Grayling, and Atlantic Salmon. Even if you are fishing for other species, I am sure you will find them fun to look at and potentially useful as crossover flies. I know I am going to tie a few for my box. MORE...

William Lovelace Flies
Pitcroy Fancy Spey and Stockholm Fly  Variations

Pitcroy Fancy Spey

William Lovelace begins this pictorial essay with a lesson about how lots of practice can pay off for tyers striving to perfect their craft. It encourages those of us who have a tendency to give up, just to have a little persistence and we will be rewarded. MORE...

Strombron Variation

These William Lovelace variations of flies that he picked up in fishing shop in Gamla Stan (Old Town) Stockholm, are a lesson in the crossover potential of flies developed for a different purpose, on a different continent. Bill sent me several of these variations, which I used with great success on the late Chum Salmon run.  I think they might have equal potential for other salmon species and steelhead. MORE...

The Flies of Ken Broadhead

Pink Toy

Ken pays tribute to the late Yuri Shumakov with his rendition of Yuri's  tube flies and his to new contributor Gary Tanner with his rendition of his Celtic Beauty. Ken shows beautifully how tube flies for Pacific Salmon and Atlantic Salmon flies can be modified to steelhead flies with classical form and utility. MORE..
