The Parakeet was designed because of the great success I have had with wrapped zonker (rabbit) strip flies for fall Pacific Salmon, especially in these colors. This is a slight departure from the design of previous flies I have used, but none-the-less, I will have success with this one. More reports to come. Vary the colors and the weight of this fly to suit conditions and species. See also, Parakeet, Barbell Eyes for variations of this fly.
November 6, 2004: Parakeet went through its first field test today and performed admirably. This fly "swims" in the water just like a colorful minnow. The rabbit fur undulates like a minnow body and the marabou wiggles like a minnow tail. It took about 10 Chum hooked solidly in the mouth. The fish literally swallowed it. I have every intention now of making this one of my primary flies, in a variety of colors. Next up - need to try this on silvers.
August 13, 2005: OK, it was only a Jack, about 5 1bs, but this was the first test on Kings and the fish just nailed this fly. It was a bright fish and feisty. I was happy to get a strike, as the run has been a little slow so far. Anyway, I've never seen a fly lodged so deep in the throat of a salmon. I developed this fly last year during the Chum run and I've been eager to see how it fared with Kings and Silvers. Used a variation with barbell eyes to get it down deep.
